Matt Brown Is Dead at 43. The River Doesn't Lie — But the Myth Did.

Matt Brown was 43 years old when his youngest brother Noah pulled his body from the Okanogan River near Oroville, Washington. The Okanogan County Sheriff's Office had opened a search after a 911 caller reported, on Wednesday, May 27, that he had just spoken to a man sitting in the shallow water of the river south of Oroville — and that he was concerned. The body was recovered days later. His brother Bear Brown confirmed the identification in a TikTok video, stating plainly: "They found a body in the river a few hours ago and it was positively identified as being Matt."
Bear was careful, as he should be, to note that the coroner had not yet issued an official cause of death. But he did not pretend he didn't know what had happened. He had already told his followers earlier in the week that witnesses reported seeing Matt in the water, and that he had been told — though he could not confirm it at the time — that his brother had taken his own life. That framing proved accurate.
What Bear also disclosed, and what explains far more than any tabloid headline about a "mystery woman," is that Matt had been struggling. "He was going through like a really bad breakup," Bear said — a woman Matt cared about, a relationship that had collapsed, and, by Bear's account, drinking that had escalated alongside it. He added that Matt had been fighting addiction for a long time: alcohol, drugs, an on-and-off battle that stretched across most of his adult life.
The broader story is not cheerful. Matt Brown first went to rehab in 2016, during the run of *Alaskan Bush People*, the Discovery Channel series that made the family famous — or more precisely, made a highly produced version of them famous. He relapsed and returned to treatment in 2018. That same year, two women came forward with sexual misconduct allegations against him. No criminal charges were ultimately filed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office, but the allegations ended his time on the show. He was cut from the cast by 2020.
The estrangement that followed was not a quiet, private grief. It was a documented fracture. Bear said publicly that some of Matt's siblings had stopped speaking to him after the allegations emerged, choosing to believe the women who came forward. Matt's father, Billy Brown, died in February 2021 — and Matt was not present, a detail that speaks to how complete the family separation had become. His mother Ami, whom Bear specifically asked the public to treat with kindness in his TikTok statement, has reportedly maintained some level of care and contact with Matt over the years, even as the rest of the family pulled back.
For his part, Matt had spent recent years largely off the grid in a more literal sense than the show ever portrayed — no production crew, no Discovery cameras, just a YouTube channel and Instagram presence where he documented a quieter life. He also claimed publicly that the show itself had been staged, and alleged that production had facilitated access to substances during filming. That allegation has never been independently verified or addressed by the network on record, but it is the kind of claim that tends to get buried when a man becomes a liability and the brand moves on.
In the days before his death, fans who had followed Matt's social media noticed a video he posted featuring a woman. The speculation that immediately followed — was this the girlfriend Bear mentioned? a new relationship? — reflects the strange intimacy parasocial audiences develop with reality television subjects, and it reflects nothing confirmed. Bear addressed it gently, noting only that there had been a painful breakup and that Matt had cared for this person. The details remain private.
What is not private, because Bear chose to make it public in real time — a decision some will find strange and others will find generous — is the shape of what happened. A man who had been famous for living rough, who had publicly battled addiction and privately navigated the fallout of allegations and exile, was found alone in a river in Washington state, in the place he had retreated to when everything else fell away. The coroner will confirm the official cause of death in due course. But the facts Bear laid out before that confirmation are enough to understand the arc.
If there is an honest reckoning to be had, it is this: reality television made the Brown family into a product, and Matt Brown was a person inside that product who was, by multiple accounts, struggling in ways that the cameras either missed or were designed to frame differently. When he became inconvenient — after allegations, after relapses, after the brand calculus shifted — the show moved on. The family, fractured by the allegations, moved on too. He was 43. The Okanogan River runs cold even in late May.
