There is a modular synthesizer rig named Nathan sitting at the center of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard's live setup, and according to guitarist and primary songwriter Stu Mackenzie, it has done something to his brain. "It completely rewired my brain," he has said of the instrument — and after hearing "Alien Metal," the title track to the six-piece's forthcoming 28th studio album, that claim stops sounding like hyperbole and starts sounding like a medical report.

The track is the second preview of the full LP, following "Level 5," which the band released last month. Where much of the Gizzard catalog has drifted between psych-rock, thrash metal, jazz, microtonal tuning experiments, and folk, this new material plants the flag somewhere most rock bands don't dare go: full-throttle electronic dance music with a modular backbone. The title track doesn't hedge. It commits.

What makes the project genuinely notable — rather than a novelty pivot — is its origin in live performance. The band didn't go to a studio, hire a producer, and decide to make an EDM record. They built Nathan, they played Nathan night after night on tour, and the album emerged from that accumulated muscle memory. That's a fundamentally different creative pathway than most genre experiments, and it shows in the texture of the music: this isn't a rock band imitating dance music, it's a band that learned dance music from the inside out.

The LP, titled Alien Metal, is set for release "later this summer" on P(doom) Records — a label name that doubles as its own kind of mission statement. P(doom) is a term borrowed from AI risk discourse, the probability that artificial general intelligence ends badly for humanity. Whether the band is being wry or sincere about that framing is, characteristically, unclear. King Gizzard has never been a band that explains itself, and that ambiguity is part of the brand.

The alien imagery is doing real work here. The Alien franchise's industrial, biomechanical aesthetic — H.R. Giger's chrome-and-flesh iconography — maps surprisingly well onto modular synthesis culture, which fetishizes precisely the same intersection of organic signal and cold machine logic. The band has leaned into that visual language in the album's rollout, and the title track sounds like it was conceived inside a spacecraft that runs on bass frequencies.

For longtime Gizzard followers, none of this should be shocking in principle, even if the execution surprises. This is a band that released five albums in a single year, that has played with odd time signatures and unconventional tunings for the better part of a decade, and that treats genre as a costume to be tried on and discarded. The question was never whether they'd go somewhere unexpected. The question was always which direction.

The answer, this summer, is the rave. Along with the album announcement, the band confirmed a run of Australian tour dates, including what's being billed as a two-day Croxton Block Party in Melbourne this October — essentially a Gizzard-curated mini-festival in their home city. For a band with an obsessive international following, staging something that intimate and local carries its own kind of statement: the machine named Nathan is coming home.

Whether Alien Metal lands as a genuine contribution to electronic music or an inspired detour will be clearer once the full record is out. But "Alien Metal" the song earns its runtime. It's dense, it moves, and it sounds like six people who have been doing this long enough to not be afraid of being wrong — which is the only condition under which music this strange gets made right.
