On the morning of 12 August, the sky over the West Country is going to do something it has not done in a generation. Up to 95% of the sun will be swallowed by the moon in a deep partial solar eclipse — the most dramatic such event visible from the United Kingdom since the total eclipse of 11 August 1999, which drew millions into fields, clifftops, and car parks across Cornwall and Devon in a moment of collective, almost primal, awe. That event sold out hotels six months in advance. This one deserves the same attention.

The eclipse belongs to a larger celestial occasion. The path of totality — where the moon completely blocks the solar disc — sweeps across Greenland, Iceland, and into northern Spain. For those prepared to travel, the Faroe Islands fringe and the northern Spanish coast offer totality. But for the rest of us anchored to the southwest of England, what arrives overhead is still extraordinary: a deep crescent sun, a sky that dims to something closer to late dusk than noon, and a drop in temperature that is visceral rather than merely meteorological.

Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly sit at the favoured end of the UK gradient. Observers there can expect approximately 93–95% obscuration, meaning only a thin, blinding sliver of the solar disc will remain visible at maximum eclipse. Move northeast — Bristol, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire — and the figure drops to around 90%. Still dramatic. Still the kind of event where birds fall briefly silent and people instinctively look up from their phones. Northern Scotland will see lower coverage, around 75–80%, but even that is not something to shrug at.

The geometry at work is worth pausing on. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between Earth and the sun, casting its shadow onto a narrow corridor of the planet's surface. The moon's orbit is inclined to the ecliptic plane by about 5 degrees, which is precisely why eclipses do not happen every new moon — the alignment has to be almost perfect. On 12 August it will be close enough to plunge part of the North Atlantic into totality and deliver a near-miss to the British Isles that, by historical standards, counts as a very near miss indeed.

The 1999 eclipse remains the cultural reference point for anyone who witnessed it. Totality tracked directly across Cornwall, and the two minutes of darkness it produced at around 11:11 BST are still described by those present in language that sounds closer to religious experience than astronomy. The 2026 eclipse will not produce totality over UK soil — that distinction belongs to the Spanish coast — but a 95% partial eclipse is not a consolation prize. At that level of obscuration, the ambient light takes on the quality of a badly-exposed photograph; the horizon glows orange in all directions simultaneously; and the temperature can fall by several degrees Celsius in minutes.

For planning purposes, the eclipse reaches maximum coverage over the southwest during the mid-morning hours. Clear skies are the single non-negotiable variable. The West Country in August is statistically better placed than Scotland or the Midlands for cloud-free conditions, but August over the Atlantic is not a guarantee. Coastal headlands — Lizard Point, Land's End, the cliffs above St Ives — offer both the highest obscuration percentages and the widest, most unobstructed horizon, which matters when you want to watch the light change across the full sky rather than between rooftops.

The safety rules are unchanged and non-negotiable: never look directly at a partial eclipse with the naked eye. The sun's disc, even at 95% covered, retains enough intensity to cause permanent retinal damage within seconds. Certified ISO 12312-2 solar viewing glasses are the minimum requirement. Welding glass at shade 14 works. A pinhole projector — a piece of card with a small hole, casting the sun's image onto a second surface — costs nothing and is perfectly effective for the uninitiated or for children. Unfiltered cameras, binoculars, and telescopes pointed directly at the sun are capable of destroying the instrument and the eye behind it.

What makes 12 August particularly notable for skywatchers is that the eclipse is not the only event on offer. The Perseid meteor shower — consistently one of the year's most reliable displays, peaking at up to 100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions — reaches its annual maximum on the night of 11–12 August. This overlap is genuinely unusual. The same night that follows the daytime eclipse, a clear sky will produce one of the best meteor shows of the year, with the added bonus of a moon that will have already set by the early hours, leaving a dark canvas for the Perseids. The date has a legitimate claim to being the single best day-and-night combination for naked-eye astronomy available from the British Isles in years.

The next comparable eclipse visible from the UK will not arrive until 2090 at significant coverage levels. That is not hyperbole — it is orbital mechanics. Mark 12 August in the calendar, drive southwest if you can, pack the eclipse glasses, and stay up for the shooting stars.
