The number is worth sitting with: 49 million additional people tipped into acute food insecurity on top of the hundreds of millions already there. That is the World Food Programme's central projection for what a strong El Niño event will do to the world's most fragile food systems by the end of next year — and the WFP is not known for overstating its case.

The agency's report puts the probability of a very strong El Niño at 81 percent. Sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific are already at their warmest recorded levels since at least 1982, and climatologists tracking the current cycle say it could surpass the 1997–1998 event — still the benchmark for catastrophic El Niño disruption — making it potentially the most powerful such phenomenon since 1950. That is not a projection from an activist group. That is an operational assessment from the agency responsible for feeding people when governments cannot.

El Niño works as a multiplier. It does not create hunger from scratch — it detonates it where conditions are already combustible. In East and Southern Africa, where rainfall cycles are tightly coupled to Pacific sea surface temperatures, the pattern is well-documented: El Niño years bring drought to maize-dependent countries while flooding others. Southern Africa's staple crop belt — Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique — faces suppressed rainfall. East Africa, already cycling through one of the worst multi-season drought sequences in recorded history before this event began, faces further disruption. In Mozambique, provincial authorities in Sofala have already begun emergency food pre-positioning in anticipation of harvest failures, a signal that ground-level planners are not waiting for Geneva to tell them what is coming.

The Asia-Pacific picture is equally sharp. El Niño suppresses monsoon rainfall across parts of South and Southeast Asia, disrupting rice production in some of the highest-density agricultural zones on earth. It simultaneously accelerates drought conditions in parts of Central America's Dry Corridor, where smallholder farmers have spent years watching yields erode and choosing migration over starvation. The WFP has explicitly flagged these corridors as high-priority response zones.

What the report does not dwell on — but which any honest reading demands — is the compounding effect of the existing crisis baseline. The world was already carrying a near-record acute food insecurity burden before this El Niño began to develop, driven by a combination of conflict, post-pandemic economic disruption, and the sustained inflation shock that followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Fertilizer prices spiked, fuel costs hit smallholder transport hard, and donor fatigue quietly shrank humanitarian pipelines even as headlines moved on. The WFP's own funding gap has been significant in recent cycles. El Niño is arriving into a system that has not recovered from the last round of shocks.

The commodity dimension adds another layer. El Niño events have a well-established historical relationship with volatility in globally traded agricultural commodities — cocoa, coffee, palm oil, sugar, and certain grain grades all show price sensitivity to Pacific temperature anomalies. When production falls in key growing regions, traders price in the shortfall before the harvest failure fully materializes. That means import-dependent countries — most of the nations on the WFP's high-risk list — face both lower domestic output and higher international prices simultaneously, a scissors effect that humanitarian budgets are poorly designed to absorb.

There is also an epidemiological wrinkle that rarely makes the food security framing but matters operationally. El Niño-linked ecological disruption — changes in vector habitat, animal stress, wildlife-human contact patterns in drought-affected zones — has historically correlated with upticks in zoonotic disease transmission in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. Public health systems in the same countries now bracing for food emergencies are not, as a rule, flush with surge capacity. The WFP's mandate is food, not disease response, but the overlap is real and the coordination challenge is already being flagged at the inter-agency level.

The WFP says it is ramping up preparedness and pre-positioning. That is meaningful, but preparedness is not the same as funding. The agency operates on voluntary contributions, and the political will to mobilize emergency resources before a crisis fully photographs itself — before the harvest failure, before the children are visibly wasted, before the cameras arrive — has historically been weak. The 49 million figure is a forecast, not a fait accompli. Whether it becomes one is largely a question of whether donor governments treat an 81 percent probability like the emergency it is, or treat it like a projection to revisit when it gets worse.
