SpaceX Rocket Punched a 60-Foot Scar Into the Moon — NASA Has the Receipts

For years, a discarded Falcon 9 upper stage tumbled through deep space on a trajectory nobody was actively tracking — a ghost of a 2015 mission, fuel-depleted and uncontrolled. In early 2022, astronomers pieced together that this object was on a collision course with the Moon. On March 4, 2022, it hit. This month, NASA finally released the before-and-after imagery that makes that moment concrete: a raw, roughly 60-foot-wide gouge punched into the lunar regolith near Hertzsprung crater on the Moon's far side.
The images were captured by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter — a spacecraft that has been methodically photographing the Moon's surface since 2009 and serves as the closest thing humanity has to a permanent lunar surveillance system. LRO imaged the impact zone between August 11 and 12, and the agency noted that getting a clean shot was genuinely difficult. The far side is remote even by lunar standards, the geometry has to align precisely for LRO's camera to catch useful shadow angles, and pinpointing a crater less than 20 meters wide on a body with a surface area of roughly 38 million square kilometers is not a trivial task.
What the images show is more interesting than a simple divot. The crater is unusually shallow — less than 10 feet deep based on shadow-length calculations — and its profile suggests the impactor didn't hit as a single dense mass but as something closer to an irregular, distributed object. That detail matters. Most spent rocket stages are hollow cylinders, and the mass distribution at impact shapes the crater geometry. The LRO team's analysis indicates the crater morphology is consistent with a low-density, asymmetric impactor — which fits a depleted, tumbling upper stage almost exactly.
The object's identity was itself a minor controversy. It was initially logged as a SpaceX Falcon 9 second stage from a DSCOVR satellite launch, but some observers briefly argued it might be a Chinese Long March 3C booster from the Chang'e 5-T1 mission. China's government denied ownership. SpaceX did not publicly contest the Falcon 9 attribution. Bill Gray, the independent astronomer who first flagged the trajectory, ultimately stood by his identification, and the crater's location on the far side — consistent with the projected Falcon 9 impact corridor — added weight to that conclusion. The crater is now catalogued in NASA's official records.
The deeper story here is not really about SpaceX. It's about the systemic absence of accountability for what gets left in cislunar space. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty obliges nations to bear international responsibility for objects they launch, but enforcement is essentially nonexistent for deep-space hardware that drifts beyond Earth orbit. No regulatory body required SpaceX — or any other operator — to deorbit this upper stage. No international body formally tracked it as a hazard until a private astronomer noticed it by chance. The Moon absorbed the hit without complaint, but the scenario is a rehearsal for something worse.
There are roughly a dozen large pieces of launch debris known to be in chaotic, Earth-Moon resonant orbits at any given time, with more accumulating as launch cadence increases across U.S., European, Chinese, and Indian programs. Some of these will eventually hit the Moon. Some may pose a hazard to lunar orbit, which is becoming increasingly crowded as NASA's Artemis program, China's ILRS initiative, and commercial lunar ventures put more hardware in the vicinity. The International Academy of Astronautics and the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space have both flagged the cislunar debris environment as an emerging governance gap, but binding rules do not yet exist.
NASA's LRO team, to its credit, has done exactly what it should: systematically image, document, and release the data. The crater is now part of the public record. What it records is not just a rocket's end but a policy vacuum's visible consequence — the moment when years of regulatory drift made a small, permanent mark on another world.
The 60-foot crater near Hertzsprung will sit there essentially forever. The Moon has no weather, no erosion, no forces to erase it on any human timescale. It is, in its way, a monument to the gap between how fast humans move hardware into space and how slowly the governance frameworks meant to manage that hardware tend to follow.
