The critics largely hated it. The audience mostly didn't care.

The film's producer has now spoken publicly about the timeline for Michael 2, confirming that the production is actively moving toward a late-2026 or early-2027 start date. That puts a sequel on track for a 2028 theatrical release — a compressed turnaround by franchise standards, but entirely consistent with Lionsgate's appetite to capitalize on momentum while Jaafar Jackson's performance is still fresh cultural currency.

The original film ended in 1988, closing with the on-screen tagline "His Story Continues" — language that was never accidental. The estate and the studio telegraphed from the outset that this was a multi-part project, not a standalone portrait. The sequel is expected to cover the period from the late 1980s onward, which means it will be obligated to reckon with the accusations of child sexual abuse that first surfaced publicly in 1993, the 2005 criminal trial in which Jackson was acquitted on all counts, and the 2019 HBO documentary Leaving Neverland, which reignited public debate around claims the estate has consistently and forcefully denied.
